Sesame is a flowering plant that is grown throughout the world and cultivated for its edible seeds. Sesame oil, a source of vitamin E, is derived from sesame seeds. There are many varieties of sesame oil that range in flavor and color. Sesame oil is used as cooking oil, in body massage, as a hair treatment, and in food and drug manufacturing.

Use of sesame in Egyptian medicine and cuisine reportedly dates to around 1500 BC. Sesame oil was used to illuminate lamps found in Egyptian archeological sites. Sesame oil is reportedly a traditional Egyptian remedy for circulatory disorders, arthritis and nerve pain.

Sesame is an important traditional health food and has been used to improve nutritional status and prevent various diseases in Asian countries for thousands of years. Sesame seeds are not only rich in oil and protein, but also in lignans, sesamin and sesamolin. Existing data supports the hypothesis that sesame seeds and its lignans may have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

Sesamin and sesamolin are major lignans in sesame seed oil. The effects of sesamin, one of the most abundant lignans in sesame seed has an anti-inflammatory effect.

The research study at Faculty of Pharmacy, Federal University of Juiz de Fora, Brazil shows that sesamin represents a promising target for helping pain and inflammation.

Black sesame is rich in lignin, contains anti-inflammatory properties, that may have anti-inflammatory effects.

Hyaluronic acid is a glycosaminoglycan, a very long chain of disaccharides (sugars) present in all connective tissues that are responsible for retaining moisture. As we age, levels of hyaluronic acid fall—some say by as much as 50 percent. Genetics, smoking, and magnesium and zinc deficiencies appear to accelerate this loss, but it happens to all of us to some degree. The result? Aching joints and sagging skin.

 

According to webmd.com, Hyaluronic acid works by acting as a cushion and lubricant in the joints and other tissues. In addition, it might affect the way the body responds to injury.

Dr. Julian Whitaker states that supplementation with hyaluronic acid can help promote healthy joints and skin.

 

In an in-house, placebo-controlled study of patients with osteoarthritis of the knee, those taking 80 mg of hyaluronic acid daily for two months had a 33 percent average improvement in pain scores compared to a 6 percent improvement in the placebo group.
